My pricing evolution

Sometimes “the way we’ve always done things” is NOT the best way.

Like most stylists, I used to base my prices on the type of service. But I now use a simpler pricing model that makes more sense. Here’s how I got here:

My first step a few years back was to remove gender from my haircut pricing, because what does gender have to do with how much your haircut should cost?

At first, I switched to pricing by length of hair, but that didn’t really make sense either.

After a lot of research and thought, I created a simpler pricing model that involves two basic but radical changes:

1. Transparent pricing based on time.

2. Doing away with tipping.

Transparent pricing based on time

My pricing is based on a rate of $100 per hour, plus tax. This amount allows me to cover my expenses and earn a sustainable living.

Appointments are booked in blocks of 30, 45, or 60 minutes, depending on the service you need and what kind and length of hair you have.

For example, kids’ cuts will typically be 30 minutes (for $50).

If you come in regularly (every 3 to 6 weeks) for a quick, barber-style short cut without a wash, that will usually be 45 minutes (for $75).

Longer cuts with a blowdry will typically be 60 minutes (for $100). If your hair has a ton of texture or takes a long time to cut, we’ll likely need 75 to 90 minutes ($125 to $150).

Colour will work much the same, based on how long it takes.

Doing away with tipping

Why no more tipping? Well, two reasons.

First, it can be awkward and confusing to figure out how much you “should” tip.

And second, tipping puts the pressure on YOU to provide ME with a livable wage.

I’ve decided it’s better for both you and me to have one simple, all-inclusive, transparent price.

If you are underemployed or unemployed, I offer a by-donation, sliding scale or payment plan. Please don’t be shy to reach out and share your situation.
